Organization Description: Since 1981, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) serves as the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA spans three Bay Area counties and includes locations such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco. The Parks Conservancy advances public awareness and provides volunteer and educational opportunities in the parks, focusing on the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. We are park builders, caretakers, ambassadors, and educators, connecting people to parks in support of our vision Parks for All Forever. Work location for this role is Alcatraz Island and some duties require working on weekends and holidays. The position is full-time, non-benefited, seasonal and anticipated to end on/around September 26, 2025.
Department: Interpretive Centers and Sales. The department develops park books, maps, exhibits, and manages warehousing, distribution, and online sales programs. Interpretive Centers include Alcatraz Park Stores, Muir Woods Visitor Center, Lands End Lookout, Warming Hut, Fort Point Park Store, Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center, and Presidio Visitor Center.
Responsibilities Deliver outstanding visitor services and sell interpretive merchandise and books to help achieve sales goals.
Maintain visual, store, and merchandising standards; assist with inventory management and cash handling; operate cash register accurately.
Provide information about park history, trails, San Francisco landmarks, public transportation, and Parks Conservancy programs and opportunities.
Promote and sell memberships; explain benefits and participate in the round-up donations program.
Assist with year-end inventory, cycle counts, and other duties as directed by Managers & Team Leads.
Maintain a clean and organized store, including backroom and storage spaces.
Support relationships with internal and external partners (GGNPC, NPS, U.S. Park Police, Park Partners, Alcatraz City Cruises, etc.).
Ensure effective communication with managers about product and supply needs; respond to Conservancy emails on scheduled shifts as applicable.
Provide information about Conservancy programs, volunteer opportunities, and ways to connect people to the Parks.
Be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays; wear a uniform with name badge for scheduled shifts.
Complete required training in safety, de-escalation, park trails, cultural resources, and other topics; participate in ongoing sales skills, product knowledge, and inventory training.
In the absence of Managers or Team Leads, communicate immediately with Law Enforcement for emergencies or threats to visitors and co-workers, then notify Managers and Supervisors.
Qualifications Two years' retail experience or equivalent preferred.
Excellent visitor service and sales abilities; professional, reliable, and able to work with minimal supervision.
Accurate and efficient cash handling; strong verbal and written communication skills.
Interest in sharing knowledge about the history, natural history, and trails of the national park site with visitors.
Retail, bookstore, museum, or park ranger/intern experience preferred.
High school degree or equivalent preferred; previous public-facing experience is a plus.
Ability to work in a busy retail environment with high visitor interaction and conversation.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment Standing most of the day, with occasional sitting, squatting, kneeling, or walking.
Work on the sales floor, stockroom, and outdoors; regular walking around the site and outside environment.
Ability to lift, carry, or position objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Uniform and professional appearance required; work may involve ferry travel from Pier 33 to Alcatraz Island.
Work is performed at three retail stores on Alcatraz Island: The Dock Store, Building 64 Store, and Cell House Museum Store; walking on hills equivalent to a 13-story climb; standing or walking for 6 to 8 hours per day.
Pay and Benefits Base pay range: $20.00/hr
