Position Summary Reports to: Senior Vice President, Convention Sales & Services We're looking for a Director of Convention Sales to lead our team and promote the nation's capital as a premier convention destination. As the Director of Convention Sales, no two days are alike, but you'll have a core set of responsibilities that drive our success. Your day could start by reviewing key performance indicators and sales reports to track our progress toward goals. As a leader and mentor, you'll conduct regular check-ins and strategy sessions to keep our talented sales team motivated and on track. A significant part of your day will be dedicated to prospecting and closing new business by maintaining relationships with existing clients and building new connections within the hospitality industry. You'll also participate in high-level discussions with senior staff to help shape Destination DC's overall strategic direction. Your work is a balance of high-level strategy and hands-on management, all with the goal of driving business and showcasing our nation's capital as a top convention destination. If you are passionate about sales, and building relationships, this is the perfect role for you. Your Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include the following, but are not limited to): 1. Assist the Senior Vice President, Convention Sales & Services with the following: Lead and manage a multi-city sales team (Washington, DC, New York, and Chicago) to ensure aggressive prospecting and optimal productivity. Develop and implement an annual marketing plan and create strategic direction for the sales division's short-term and long-term success. Manage and interpret sales data from monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to drive sales initiatives and overall strategy. Oversee all aspects of the sales budget, including planning and managing expenses for events and trade shows. 2. Develop cooperative programs, customer familiarization trips, sales missions with area hotels and hospitality industry to market the area and direct sales personnel in preparation for such. 3. Answer employee questions, resolve work related challenges and interprets corporation policies to staff to improve the quality and quantity of work performed within accountable areas. 4. Coordinates and monitors workflow including assigning, transferring and delegating files to Sales Managers and support staff to support the RFP process. 5. Work collaboratively with the Tourism Department on marketing and selling to the sports market. 7. Collaborate with Sr.VP of Convention Services and Director of Global Sales on essential cross-departmental functions. 8. Participate as an active member of Senior Staff offering inputs of Destination DC's overall strategic direction as it pertains to convention sales. Convention Sales 1. Generate bookings and maintain a client base from direct contact and involvement with the local and extended hospitality industry. 2. Maintain and secure a relationship with the various organizations which manage and govern various aspects of hospitality in the capital area 3. Develop and achieve room night goals in collaboration with Sr.VP of Sales and Services 4. Collaborate working relationships with hotel DOS, WEWCC with monthly/quarterly meetings and sales updates 5. Coordinate weekly business review meetings to make business decisions and review selling activity Supervisory Responsibilities 1. Assist Sr. VP of Sales & Services in coaching new Sales Managers with account development, closing business developing sales strategies and DDC procedures 2. Assist in interviewing and selection of Sales Managers and onboarding/training. 3. Manage performance appraisals as well as any disciplinary action. 4. Conduct weekly 1:1 meetings with direct reports 5. Manage administrative duties such as timesheets, expense reports, PTO What You Bring: Experience, Competencies & Education Minimum five (5) years management and leadership experience in related field, preferably convention bureau facility or hotel sales and convention services Bachelor's Degree (B.S. /B.A.) from four-year college or university in Business Administration or related field required Ability to read, analyze, articulate and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures A demonstrated track record of success in sales and a workflow coordination is critical Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and destination management software systems required Effective decision-making plus excellent presentation and communication skills are essential. Extensive knowledge of and enthusiasm for city and facilities Strong leadership skills with experience managing and motivating a sales team Superior organization skills and attention to detail Willingness to work evenings and weekends; willingness to travel Your Measure of Success: Team Annual Room Night Goals Team Annual leads generated Periodic performance evaluations gauging quantitative and quantitative performance against identified goals
