Position Summary: Matheson Tri-Gas, Inc. is seeking a knowledgeable andproactive Indirect Tax Manager – Sales Tax to lead our indirect tax compliance and strategy. This individual will be responsible for managing all aspects of sales and use tax compliance, including reconciliations, registrations, reporting, and process improvements across multiple business entities and jurisdictions. This is a key leadership role within the Tax Department, requiring strong technical expertise, analytical thinking, and the ability to collaborate across departments and with external advisors. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in indirect tax, experience with ERP systems, and a passion for driving process improvements and compliance excellence. Experience with Vertex tax engine and ECM module is highly preferred, as the company is currently implementing Vertex to enhance tax automation and accuracy.
Key Responsibilities: Lead and manage all sales and use tax compliance activities, including return preparation, review, and timely filings. Manage relationship with co-sourced tax return preparation firm and work other tax advisory firms Oversee and perform monthly and quarterly reconciliations of sales tax data to ensure accuracy and completeness of filings. Collaborate with Finance, Legal, and Operations teams to ensure tax compliance in contracts, transactions, and system configurations. Provide strategic tax consulting and planning for operations and client-specific contracts. Review and maintain ERP tax code configurations, exemption matrices, and system tax logic. Lead the implementation and ongoing optimization of the Vertex tax engine and ECM module, ensuring alignment with business processes and compliance requirements. Support M&A activities by evaluating tax implications and integrating acquired entities into existing compliance processes. Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities within the indirect tax function. Maintain and manage tax calendars, internal controls, and documentation for all indirect tax filings. Provide training and guidance to internal teams on indirect tax matters. Manage customer exemption and resale certificates, ensuring accuracy and compliance. Support reverse audits, voluntary disclosure agreements, and tax controversy matters. Assist with other indirect tax filings as needed within the organization.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (required). Minimum 5+ years of experience in sales and use tax (required). Strong understanding of indirect tax laws and multi-state compliance requirements. Experience with Vertex tax engine and ECM module or similar tax software (preferred). Experience with ERP systems and tax automation tools. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical, organizational, and project management abilities. Ability to explain complex tax concepts to non-tax professionals and senior leadership. High level of integrity and discretion with confidential information.
