Automotive General Sales Manager (GSM)

An established import dealership is seeking a driven and hands-on General Sales Manager to lead the sales department with a focus on maximizing sales effectiveness and delivering results. The General Sales Manager will be responsible to desk deals, lead and motivate the sales team, conduct TOs, and actively close deals on the showroom floor. This role requires a hands-on leader and motivator who thrives on driving sales volume and ensuring consistent execution of sales processes.
Responsibilities include managing the daily operations of the sales department, setting and achieving performance targets, coaching sales staff for improved effectiveness, and maintaining accountability throughout the team. The position is highly involved in every stage of the sales process, from prospect engagement through deal closure.
This is a great opportunity for a results-oriented sales leader with proven success in desking deals, leading teams, and consistently hitting sales targets. The GSM will report directly to the General Manager who has been with the organization for many years, providing stable leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
Take an active, lead-from-the-front approach to driving sales and profitability. Oversee and support Sales Managers and Finance Managers, ensuring accountability and alignment with dealership goals. Coach, train, and develop a sales team to hit volume and gross targets Run morning meetings to get the day started and team motivated Implement and refine processes to enhance efficiency, profitability, and long-term stability. Maintain a strong presence on the showroom floor, actively engaging with customers and staff to push results. Establish a positive, high-energy sales culture focused on professionalism and accountability Work the desk, structure deals, and be directly involved in closing and TOs to maximize every opportunity. Drive consistent, month-over-month growth by improving sales strategies, lead management, and customer retention efforts. Collaborate with the General Manager on inventory management, marketing strategies, and financial performance. Develop, mentor, and coach the management team, ensuring a high-performance culture. Conduct regular one-on-one coaching and team training sessions Oversee internet lead handling and CRM utilization, Dealertrack experience is a plus Qualifications: Proven experience as a General Sales Manager in a dealership setting. Hands-on leadership style with a relentless drive to grow variable operations. Strong desking and deal-structuring skills, with a track record of closing deals and maximizing gross. Ability to push performance while maintaining stability and process consistency. Compensation: Compensation package will be in the $170,000 - $190,000 range based on experience and performance with definite room for growth. Benefits package provided 401(K)
